New Directions for Social Justice in Australian Education Symposium

Tue, Feb. 11, 2025 16:00:00 — 18:00:00 AEST

The Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) cordially invites you to its inaugural educator development session for 2025, the New Directions for Social Justice in Australian Education Symposium. This symposium brings together timely discussions on social justice and systems change from leading scholars and practitioners in the field of education.

The symposium takes stock of the current climate of widespread proliferation of mis- and disinformation, post-truth populisms, resurgent toxic masculinity, racism, genocide, environmental collapse, and the rise of the Far and Religious Right, which pose a significant threat to equity in school spaces. This session thus engages in theoretical and empirical discussion from local and international experts in social justice, spanning First Nations/Aboriginal representation and educational sovereignty, multicultural education and diversity, minority education cultures, school leadership, curriculum and pedagogy, as well as reparative justice.

This session is open to all academics, as well as school leaders and teachers with a broad interest in social justice in education, regardless of subject specialisation. It is also open to members of the broader education community who are keen to learn more about pertinent educational equity issues.

Discussants include:

  • Professor Tracey Bunda (The University of Queensland)
  • Professor Arathi Sriprakash (University of Oxford)
  • Associate Professor Christina Ho (University of Technology Sydney)
  • Dr Linda Evans (Principal, Fairholme College)
  • Mrs Julie Peel (Principal, Milpera State High School)
  • Professor Greg Noble (Western Sydney University)
  • Professor Stewart Riddle (University of Southern Queensland)
  • Professor Andrew Hickey (University of Southern Queensland)
